Affordable and Unique Sites Where You Can Buy Edible Insects

People in the US and Europe are beginning to gain interest in what much of the rest of the world has known all along—that insects are a practical, healthy, and in many ways delicious part of the human diet. However, unless you live in a major city or in a border town with enough Mexican culinary infusion, you’d be hard pressed to find a restaurant that will serve you an ant egg salad or grasshopper guacamole.  So, where do you buy edible insects?

Like so many other aspects of your life, the world of online shopping comes to the rescue to help you curb that buggy appetite. If you’re really brave, you can just search Amazon.com for some edible insect snacks. For the more cautious shopper, here are some sites that specialize in edible insects, and more.

Hotlix.comMill Worm Sucker

If you have a sweet tooth, then this is the site for you. The self-titled original insect candy creators, Hotlix offers a variety of unique candied bugs, including grasshoppers dipped in chocolate and ant lollipops. You can also find cheddar cheese silkworm larva, or sour cream and onion crickets (yum?). All of the insects are processed and the candies are made fresh daily in Pismo Beach, California.

BizarreFood.com

Edible GrasshoppersThis company specializes in all sorts of rare edibles, though their main focus is on insects and arachnids. They seem to offer just about every type of edible beetle, worm, centipede, and pupae; oven roasted, dehydrated, canned, or powdered. If you’d like to sample a few types, you can find a variety of convenient Multi-Packs. The large earthworm jerky and ‘bugapoop’ tea bags sound the least appetizing, if not the most interesting. They also offer their own brands of scorpion vodka and whiskey.

EdibleBugShop.com.au

Insect Trail MixThis retailor seems to have the Western insect mentality in mind with their products. They transform familiar snacks into a delicious alternative with just a hint of buginess. Their Cacao & Cranberry Insect Trail Mix is the perfect ‘gateway bug’ for the apprehensive consumer. They also make unique candies, roasted and frozen treats, and energy or protein ‘balls.’

Nextmillenniumfarms.com

Cricket FlourThis small group of innovators call themselves the leaders of the protein revolution. Their goal is to promote alternative sources of protein to livestock, and they’re doing an incredible job with their products and recipes. If you’re interested in doing some cooking or baking of your own, they offer various insect flours, such as mealworm and cricket. When possible, they’ll also ship you live insects.

Sdwaxworms.com

San Diego Wax Worms are a small-scale business offering only wax worm shipments, but they’re worth a mention because they do ship all over the US and aren’t distributors—they grow their own worms. Apparently San Diego has the perfect predictable and mild climate for successful worm farming. They’ll send you between 125 and thousands of wax worms at a time, but how you cook and eat them is up to you.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of where to find insect foods online. Here are links to some other retailors:
